Arnold Nemetz, P.Eng.
Founding Principal

Arnold Nemetz

Arnold Nemetz, founder of Arnold Nemetz & Associates Ltd., is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering. To get his start Arnold Nemetz served as an electrical engineer with 'Domino Electric Ltd.' from 1954 to 1963, when he then began his own professional electrical engineering consulting company (Nemetz & Associates Ltd.).

While the initial emphasis was on high-rise building projects, the company quickly evolved to include lighting for projects ranging from hotels to food stores to government installations to alpine and other outdoor resorts.

As the firm's founder he brings an impressive array of knowledge and experience to the team that has contributed to the electrical engineering and design of such notable projects as the Bank of Hong Kong building, Metrotown Centre, Harbour Cove etc. (click here to read more)

MEET . . . . ARNOLD NEMETZ

By Wendy Long

Arnold Nemetz has seen his business, his profession and his city undergo a multitude of changes since he sealed his first project as an electrical engineer some 50 years ago.

Other things, such as attention to detail and unwavering commitment to client service, have not changed in his office. Nor will they, even as the firm’s second half century of business proceeds with Arnold’s son, Steve Nemetz at the helm as company CEO. Time may alter some things but the basic tenets of good business practice remain constant.

“Don’t burn your bridges,” says Arnold Nemetz, who remains Founding Principal of Vancouver-based Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd. Electrical Consulting Engineers. “Maintain a good relationships with clients. Be available. Be thorough. Personal service is the key.”

For many years the Nemetz name has played an integral role in the electrical elements of Vancouver construction projects, beginning with work undertaken by Domino Electric Ltd., founded by Arnold’s father, William Nemetz. Initially, Arnold Nemetz worked as a contractor but in time he opted to launch his own electrical engineering consulting business, a move he has never regretted.

“Engineering was something I could do on my own,” he explains. “I could spend as much, or as little time as I wanted doing it. When I was in transition, doing some contracting and some engineering, I was called as an engineer to go sort out some problems in Calgary. I think the guy game me $300 plus the plan ticket. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. I decided engineering had to be a good thing!”

The first project for Nemetz & Associates was York House School at 25th and Granville. Some 50 years later the tally of company projects is nearing 12,000 – ranging from high-rise residential buildings and office towers to commercial and retail projects. And Nemetz is proud that what started out as a company of one has now blossomed to an office of more than 50 employees

“When I started I never envisioned there would one day be that many projects or that many people employed in our firm,” he says. “In the beginning I was all hands-on. Every drawing – and at the time that was all done by hand – was checked with pencil, every line followed, by me. I did them all. Evenings, weekends, it was very time consuming. But it was extremely rewarding. When the seal went on I knew every line, I had checked every line.”

Changes in business and technology, and company success, have necessitated a move away from an individual, hands-on approach. The advent of computer drafting and design, environmental concerns and demands, security and communication requirements have all changed the way electrical engineers do business.

“One person can’t do it all any more,” stresses Nemetz. “The basic way of providing power energy to service buildings really hasn’t changed, there has been very little innovation in that area. The major change has been in lighting and communication – you need specialists in those areas.”

The city has changed as much as the business. Nemetz has witnessed, and had a hand in, the dramatic metamorphosis of Vancouver’s skyline. Among the some 12,000 projects handled by the company over the years his favourites include the Hong Kong Bank building, Bayshore Hotel, theWall Centre and Royal Centre.

But his greatest pleasure comes from the family ties that are integral to his business, from son Steve leading the firm and his daughter, Franci, serving as company Chief Administrative Officer. His granddaughter, Jennifer Stratton, has also entered the business as an interior and lighting design expert with the company’s Light Art Concepts division.

“It’s very satisfying,” smiles Nemetz. “ Things don’t necessarily work out when you have partners but when it’s family it’s a lot different. It’s been gratifying to see the business move along and expand. There are very few engineering firms that go past into the second generation and many firms that were around when I started are no longer here.”

MEET . . . . OVIDIU COJOCARU

By Wendy Long

In the fall of 2001, 47-year-old Ovodiu Cojocaru departed Romania for Canada, seeking a new job and a new life.

He quickly found both as he settled in Vancouver and gained employment with Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd electrical consulting engineers.

“I came to Canada on Oct. 25, 2001 and I started working with Steve Nemetz and his company on Nov. 13,” recalls Cojocaru. “I’m still here, and very happy. It has been a bit of an adventure”

Indeed, Cojocaru has survived and thrived in the decade since he set foot on Canadian soil. Initially hired for CADD work at Nemetz, Cojocaru advanced to become a senior designer and project manager with the company. In late 2010 he was made a Company Associate after securing his Canadian Professional Engineer – Electrical licence at the venerable age of 56.

“It’s challenging to do something like this later in life, and certainly a personal achievement for me,” he says. “I came from a different background – different country, different schools, different language. Although I had 22 years of experience back in Romania, working like an engineer, the system is different here. In Romania when you finish your studies at university you get your degree right away. Here, when you finish your studies you need to get some practical experience in a specific field before you are a P.Eng.”

Cojocaru has been involved in many high profile projects since joining Nemetz. His first major assignment was the notable Shaw Tower. He also served as the company’s project manager – electrical systems for the 2010 Olympic Village. His current projects include the Marine Drive Gateway project, a multi-use development with residential, office and retail components.

“The Village was exciting from two points, one being it’s not often people have a chance to work on an Olympic venue so it was a special project for me,” he enthuses. “Also, it was not a typical construction project. The deadline was absolute so there was a lot of pressure, and a big challenge for everyone. Also, there were environmental/sustainability aspects that had to be considered in addition to the design of power, communication, security and fire alarm systems.”

Company CEO Steve Nemetz lauds Cojocaru’s work on the Olympic venue and his persistence in gaining his P.Eng licence at an age when many people would shy at the attempt.

“We always support people who want to improve themselves professionally and Ovidiu is a great asset to our company,” he says. “He’s very organized, methodical, diligent and hands-on. He likes to do a lot of the detailed design himself, especially load calculations and distribution design. He’s also very good at meeting deadlines.

“Timelines for the Olympic Village were horrendously short and there was a huge requirement for providing energy efficient buildings — LEED Platinum and LEED Gold. There was an enormous amount of work and Ovidiu absolutely deserves a gold medal!”

Cojocaru laughs when it is suggested he provides inspiration and motivation for others wary of new challenges later in life. Just take that first step, he suggests.

“I’m not afraid of hard work, or of learning new things at an age when maybe some people think it is too much trouble to start again. It’s never too late to learn something new. If you are enthusiastic about what you’re doing, and you like what you’re doing, you can do anything.”

MEET . . . . FRANCI STRATTON

By Wendy Long

Franci Stratton is the first to admit she spends much of her day “just balancing and keeping all the balls up and moving.”

And there are plenty of “balls” to juggle! By day, Stratton serves as Chief Administrative Officer for Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd. By night she toils as chair of the North Vancouver School Board. Somehow, she also devotes considerable energy to family and community interests.

Stratton is the person who keeps the proverbial ball rolling at the Nemetz office, overseeing the administration, accounting and marketing teams in the office in addition to addressing whatever issues arise in the daily routine of the prominent Vancouver electrical consulting engineering firm.

“Every day, every hour, I have to deal with something different,” says Stratton. “I oversee a multitude of tasks. Every day there is a list of To Dos, sometimes quite diverse, and it’s a question of prioritizing them all.”

Stratton serves as a kind of conductor to the Nemetz office orchestra, ensuring all office sections operate in perfect harmony. The same might be said of her duties as School Board chair, where running meetings and liaising with school board staff, parents and the general public require leadership and a diverse skill set.

“The skills are absolutely transferable from office to school board and back again,” she says. “One of my strengths on School Board is being able to make decisions. I also have to demonstrate leadership and work to bring together trustees with diverse opinions, to work together to devise one solution to a problem. There are also financial and budget issues to consider.”

Stratton began working full-time at the Nemetz office in 1993, although the company has always been a part of her life as she is the daughter of Founding Principle Arnold Nemetz, and sister of CEO Steve Nemetz.

She stresses the notion of being part of a Family Business goes well beyond the genetic ties of father, son and daughter, however. Stratton takes pride that the Nemetz office environment resonates with both a family, and team, atmosphere that encourages camaraderie and, ultimately, boosts productivity and enhances the daily experience for everyone in the office. Work must get done, but that doesn’t mean the day-to-day office experience needs to be dreary.

“It’s certainly not a sterile, stereotypical office environment – that kind of environment doesn’t necessarily produce creativity, innovation or motivation,” says Stratton. “We are perhaps more relaxed in our day to day discussions and meetings, not so formal. We have meals together and share ideas. Putting your employees first is just as important as getting the work out the door.”

Brother Steve lauds the office environment overseen by his sister.

“We work hard but we have fun at it,” he says. “It’s not just heads down for eight hours then everyone leaves. There’s a lot of interaction and exchanging of ideas. We work hard but also have fun and that’s important.”

Indeed, Stratton declares her favourite part of the job is working with the staff – exchanging ideas, striving to solve problems together and celebrating the jobs well done.

“Within the office there is a willingness to try new things and to encourage discussion and input. It is a positive environment and that makes coming to work a pleasure.”

MEET . . . . EMMA CRONIN

By Wendy Long

Emma Cronin knows well the truth in the adage: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”

Cronin has spent much of her life making a successful first impression. For 17 years she competed in the rigorous world of Irish Dance and was ranked among the top 10 performers in the world. Customer satisfaction was also paramount as she juggled a myriad of responsibilities as a restaurant manager. She brings that same commitment, energy and aplomb to Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd. as the firm’s marketing coordinator.

“Marketing, restaurant management, dance – they’re all similar because when it comes right down to it you have once chance to impress,” explains Cronin. “You have one chance to show who and what you are, whether you’re in front of dance judges, or when people enter your restaurant and order a meal, or when you make a presentation to prospective clients. If people like what they see, they support you and they come back. If they don’t, that’s it. It may sound harsh but that’s the reality of things in this competitive world. You need to get things right – the first time.”

Cronin, who has a marketing diploma from the B.C. Institute of Technology, joined the Nemetz office in February. She concedes the first few months were “a learning curve” as she does not have an electrical engineering background and needed to learn industry language and protocols. But those challenges were offset by the enthusiasm she has for the job, which includes organizing client seminars, compiling and customizing fee proposals and, most recently, implementing a marketing plan for Light Art Concepts, the company’s lighting design division.

“We needed to make sure we were branding ourselves properly and organized in the way we present ourselves to industry,” says company CEO Steve Nemetz of the decision to bring Cronin into the fold. “Over the years we were known as a residential high-rise company but we are much more than that as we also have considerable experience with commercial, office and light industrial projects. We brought Emma in to inform the industry, and the public, about who we are and what we do.”

Nemetz notes Cronin’s restaurant industry experience, with the emphasis on diner satisfaction, fits perfectly with the company’s commitment to providing excellent service and support to clients.

“We also wanted to find someone who has a younger look on the world, someone who could bring fresh ideas and give us a perspective on what people are thinking about,” he says. “Emma is very good at taking up a task and carrying it to its conclusion, following details through to the end. She is quite clever in the way she analyzes and responds to different situations.”

Leaving the “family atmosphere” that is often part of the restaurant world was not as difficult as Cronin expected. She discovered a similar philosophy pervades the Nemetz office. She was also impressed by the company history and its enduring legacy as a family owned and operated firm.

“The company history is a huge selling point,” she says. “Nemetz has been around for 50 years. That conveys trust, loyalty, things that families are about. No matter who you are, if you read about a family business that has been around for 50 years you will be sold on it – they must be doing something right.”
